Networking is about offering help

The purpose of networking is to establish contacts with people who can bring us business opportunities, good references or other contacts. However, the basic rule is: Do not start with saying what you want. Instead, do not mention what you want at all. Focus on what you can offer.

Other principles of building meaningful and mutually beneficial relationships were summarized on Inc.com.

Do not assume that others sre interested in your needs

They can sympathize with you but that does not mean it is their duty to help you. To get someone's help, there is no other way than first identify his needs and offer help to him.

Do not try to reach everybody

Business cards are not confetti to be scattered in all directions. Find someone whom you can help and only then he can help you. You can not build meaningful relationships with dozens of people at the same time.

Do not rely only on social networks

No automatic solution - including Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter - cannot build relationships with people on its own. It is a good start but you have to add a lot more effort.

Do not aim too high

Do not focus only on the highest representatives of companies that you want to reach. Consider whether you can offer help directly to the CEO. Rather look for contacts you can really offer your help to. They will gradually get you to the top.
