6 reasons why Project Management Offices fail

The task of a Project Management Office (PMO) is to improve project management across a company. It means to provide a clear methodology of work for project managers and to define and maintain a standard of project management in the organization. Statistics, however, relentlessly show that more than half of Project Management Offices fail in practice. Why? The most frequent reasons were summarized on the PM Hut website.

1. Lack of top management support

The same applies for Project Management Offices as for any other company-wide projects - without support from above, you will fail.

2. Lack of current information

A Project Management Office manager should regularly inform his team about the progress of the individual projects. Reporting on the status of the projects is an exclusive and inherent duty of his.

3. Missing measurement of project success

The inability to measure the results of completed projects clearly shows that you don't know whether your PMO provides a return on investment. Clarify, therefore, what and how to measure always in advance.

4. Bad people

You have to select the right people for your PMO. This process should not be rushed under any circumstances.

5. Inability to implement a selected methodology

Without a clear methodology, you will have nothing according to which you could manage your projects and compare their success. Then you can hardly manage your PMO consistently.

6. Lack of training

A Project Management Office must count with the rapid development of technologies and processes for project management. All members of the PMO should undergo regular training to keep abreast of the field.
