Use nonverbal communication to accomplish your goals

In order to achieve your goal, a mere verbal expression of your demand is not enough. An important part of negotiating is nonverbal communication: eye contact, handshake or good choice of clothes are just some of the points that can help you meet your goals. Inc.com has published an article summarising important nonverbal expressions which may help you on the way to success.

1) Eye contact

Avoiding eye contact during a meeting indicates hesitation or a lack of confidence and reduces the chances of your getting what you want. This, however, does not mean you should stare fixedly at other people. 

2) Appropriate clothes

If you are not sure whether to choose formal or informal attire, it is usually better to go for the formal option.

3) Confident attitude

Handshakes should be firm (but not exaggeratedly so); you should shake twice, smile appropriately and maintain eye contact. If it is appropriate, do not be afraid to maintain the direction of the conversation; you will thus seem more charismatic and bold. If you are negotiating standing up, then stand upright. The same also applies if you are seated.

4) Gesticulation

Master the use of natural nonverbal communication, which is useful when dealing with your team. Add gestures to your speech.

5) Facial expression

The most important part of nonverbal communication is facial expressions. Learn how to use them. You should not come across as stoic: where appropriate, smile, show interest or seriousness.

6) Body language

Do not forget about body language: it says a great deal about you. Pay attention also to the body language of other people: you can mimic it and thus get closer to them. For example, if someone places their hands on the table and leans forward, you can also lean forward in response.

7 Nature tone of your voice

Your tone of voice should sound natural. It should not indicate hesitation or nerves. Do not speak in monotones.
