Can you take a vacation when self-employed?

Yes you can, and you even must. Vacation is important important to relax the mind and maintain health. The evidence suggest that an annual leave will reduce the risk of heart attack by 30% in men and by as much as 50% in women. Obviously, however, you need to plan your vacation much better than a typical employee, especially if you are just starting up your business.

The key question is, who will cater for your clients while you are away. Most business owners are worried that they may lose customers if they go on vacation.

One solution is to partially work even during vacation time. Consider in advance, however, how much work you will have. If your friends are on the beach, and you spend a week in an Internet cafe, it's not vacation.

The ideal solution is to choose one hour in the morning or in the evening when you really work. If you think your customers will need you, inform them in advance what time you are on the phone. The time frame must be exactly defined.

Try to choose a time of the year when your absence will not be noticed as much. In any case, inform your clients as far in advance as possible.

Another option is to find a short-term assistance such as a temporary worker, who will replace you for minor tasks in the meantime. They will be available to clients and give you all messages and new contacts.

Tax benefits

Another solution is a combination of work and vacation. For example, you can extend your stay at a conference that you attended by a few days. In such case, travel and hotel costs can be offset by deducted from your tax base. However, the primary purpose of the journey must be work.

Vacation also means new inspiration. Lots of great ideas are born at a time off when you do not need to solve everyday problems. In addition, you'll be surprised how much new work enthusiasm one week of vaction can provide.
