A younger boss isn't the end of the world

Although young bosses are quite common today, many people still struggle to cope with a younger boss. The age difference is such a serious obstacle for them that they aren't able to learn from a younger boss and don't recognize his authority. However, they only hurt themselves. How can you put aside your own ego and focus on supporting your younger boss? The Harvard Business Review website recommends the following steps.

1. Don't judge anybody in advance

The fact that someone is younger than you does not necessarily mean that he can't be a good boss. Try asking yourself what really makes you angry. Do you really want his job? Most of you will answer, "No, I don't." If you can't deal with your negative emotions yourself, have a talk with your colleagues or friends who can advise you.

2. Don't label people by generation

Try to avoid stereotypes about people from different generations. In fact, they aren't so different, and you should focus on what you have in common. Both you and your young boss have decided to work in the same industry and for the same company, that's where you can start.

3. Behave professionally

Remember that your young boss may feel uncomfortable when he has to manage people with much more experience. As the more experienced person, you should show some humility. Everyone has different talents and skills that can complement each other - if you don't sabotage it. Approach your relationship with your boss like any other professional relationship.

4. Manage your boss

Do you want him to accept you as a partner? Then you need to understand his problems and come up with solutions. Help him understand the things he doesn't understand yet. Be careful, however, not to act as a an arrogant know-it-all giving lectures. Describe your specific experiences rather than general "truths".

5. Don't be afraid to talk about life

Even though you are fifty years old, it shouldn't be so hard for you to imagine what life is like when you are thirty. You can become a life mentor for your young boss, you just have to be open to communication. This can make your relationship much better.
