How to engage introverts in team discussions

A good starting tactic lies in direct demand for feedback. If an introvert knows that he is expected to share feedback, it will be more pleasant for him. He needs to know what to be prepared for in advance. Then ask open questions addressed directly to him, otherwise he will be outshined by the more assertive individuals. Moreover, do not forget to thank the introvers for contributing to the team debate. You will gives them motivation for next time.

Make it clear that not participating in team discussions means not fulfilling your expectations. Identify specific examples of the impact of participating and not participating  on the work of the whole team.

Encourage the development of rhetorical skills

Involve introverts in public speaking courses where they can practice sharing their thoughts with others. They will gain a greater self-confidence and acquire the rhetorical techniques that can only improve with practice.

Ask for meeting preparation

Before a meeting, ask an introvert to write a memo on the state of affairs to be discussed. Distribute the memo to participants to let them prepare for the discussion. People will begin to address the introvert themselves without the need for him to contact them.

Accept both verbal and written feedback

Emphasize the importance of verbal communication but also allow the transmission of information in writing. For the opportunity to comment on particularly sensitive issues, set up a mailbox where your team members can throw their suggestions and comments anonymously.
