Studies confirm that the highest performers have high emotional intelligence (EQ). They are thus able to perceive, express and manage their emotions as well as work with the emotions of other people. Emotional intelligence is also one of the prerequisites for the creation of close relations between people. Unlike IQ , you can significantly increase your EQ throughout your life. You just need to be interested in learning and growing or use the following tips published by Psychology Today.

1. Learn to work with your negative emotions

This is the absolutely basic step. First, focus on why you react in the way you react in certain situations. Only then you can begin to change your behavior.

2. Learn to stay calm under pressure

If someone makes you angry, literally count to ten before you respond. If you have more space, cold water or clean air and exercise can help you. Caffeinated beverages do not help.

3. Learn to perceive and interpret others' emotions

Feel both the verbal and nonverbal signals. If you are not sure about the meaning of others' behavior, do not judge based on speculations. You had better ask.

4. Learn to express difficult emotions

There will be situations when you will need to assertively define your boundaries. You should know how to disagree, reject without guilt, choose your own priorities or resist pressure.

5. Learn to express intimate emotions

Develop your ability to communicate within close relationships with people in a way that will be constructive and rewarding for both of you. You should be able to receive the same kind of communication that you send.
