How a manager can support the mental well-being of their subordinates

The mental well-being of employees is key to their performance. Employees who are not under stress and feel comfortable in their working environment are more loyal, productive and less prone to burnout. What actually makes employees feel psychologically comfortable at the workplace, and how can you as a manager support their well-being?

As PsychologyToday.com states, effective support of the well-being of subordinates is only possible if you aim at all the four basic components of well-being at the workplace.

Physical comfort

The first component is physical comfort. Your aim here is to arrange a healthy and comfortable working environment that allows your subordinates to focus on their work. Implement modern technologies, control such parameters as air humidity and temperature, and remember to have enough plants in your offices, plus ergonomically suitable chairs and furnishings. In a wider sense, you should also support your employees in sports activities and a healthy lifestyle.

Mental comfort

Psychological comfort plays a crucial role both in the health and work performance of employees. Create a stimulating, safe and friendly working environment in which everybody may use their potential to the full. Have zero tolerance towards bullying or any form of pressure and listen to your subordinates, who will then not feel inferior or frustrated. You should also enable employees effectively to balance their personal and work lives and, if possible, offer them the option of working from home.

Social comfort

This element of well-being is often neglected. It refers to employees' satisfaction with the role they play both in the team and the company as a whole. It also refers to certain social securities within the given company. It is important in the overall well-being of the employees that they may turn to colleagues with a request or to their manager in case of trouble. Support social comfort in your team and your reward will be loyal and productive subordinates.

Financial comfort

Another important part of anyone's overall well-being is financial comfort. This means employees need not worry about their pay and receiving it on time; they will be able to live in a dignified manner and not have to count every penny. This pillar also includes a transparent bonus policy and effective communication on your part regarding financial matters.
