Crises, uncertainty and unrest: at such moments, employees look up to their managers for confidence, stability and support. But how can managers maintain a calm mindset even during a crisis? Here are five tips.

Have crisis scenarios prepared

The first valuable piece of advice is simply to be prepared for crisis situations. If you expect, albeit only in a general sense, that a crisis might occur someday, having at least a rough plan in place to tackle it ensures you will be much calmer from the very beginning.

Focus on what you can control

In a crisis, it is easy to feel frustrated by what is going wrong and beyond your control. However, you and your team should concentrate primarily on the things you can (positively) influence and work on them.

Address the core problem rationally

Don't let emotions take over: analyse rationally the problem you are facing. Identify its root causes and deal with them logically.

Create a plan and follow it

Both you and your team will feel more at ease if together you develop a clear and concrete plan. Assign tasks, determine a path to resolution, or at least minimise the negative impact of the issue, and then execute the plan as a team.

Help employees see the broader context

People facing a crisis often get caught up in the situation: they feel overwhelmed, and lose sight of the bigger picture. Help your employees take a step back and remind them that, over time, the problem will eventually be resolved. Even in a crisis, solutions exist and new possibilities arise.
