While the first snow falls in our county, South American Chile is preparing for summer heat of more than 30 degrees Celsius. Local authorities therefore urged Chileans not to wear ties to work. According to Energy Minister Rodrigo Alvarez, it can help reduce the use of air conditioning and therefore save energy. Increasing the temperature in offices by 1 to 3 degrees means to reduce energy costs by around 3%, BBC informed.
Chileans found the inspiration to take off the ties in Japan and Spain where similar measures are already in operation. If introduced in Chile in both the public and private sector during the hottest months (January to March), it would save roughly $ 10 million.
The issue of energy savings in offices was discussed also in South Korea last month. President Lee Myung-bak himself went by example and urged office workers to reduce temperature and take on warm underwear.
