There is good money to be made from public speaking once you have become established. At the beginning, though, you will probably need to develop your craft by speaking for free – for example at local events and institutions in your area.
In all likelihood, you won’t achieve instant fame, so the next phase might be speaking for only a modest fee while you gain more experience.
