Everyone would like to become a better presenter and all of us want to improve our communication skills. Therefore, many of us take a brief course or spend some time with a personal coach.

However, after every such short-term intervention, we tend gradually to backslide into our old habits. The question is how to commit to what we have learnt. Becoming extraordinary requires relentless effort. In other words, according to an article on the website of the INSEAD business school, we should constantly practise.

Practise to become a master communicator

Following these tips will enable you to become a highly effective communicator.

  • Adopt an attitude of gratitude: You should maintain a positive attitude which is aiming upwards. Don’t get caught in a downward spiral. This positive, optimistic attitude should also impact the way you interact with others.
  • Connect with others: Respect yourself, but others as well. When communicating, keep a solid eye contact and aim at creating a connection and trust with your audience.
  • Do regular vocal workouts: Use these to warm up and strengthen your voice. If you give it a try, your voice may pleasantly surprise you.
  • Diaphragmatic breathing: Our hectic lives often lead us to inefficient chest breathing. This is not the natural way of breathing and it considerably restricts the capacity of our lungs. The quality of your breath directly affects the quality of the vibration of your vocal cords.
  • Tell stories: Encourage your audience to imagine. Monotonous, lifeless words and information will get you nowhere in communication.
  • Leadership presence: Stand up for your brand and values. Make conscious and purposeful choices. Be who you are truly capable of being. Be completely confident in revealing what you are bringing to the table.
